He left school at 13 but he started working in his later teens for a Stockport-based sportswear brand that has been making football kits since 1884.
They started trading from a small area in their mother's pub, The Bulls Head, he started selling to the regulars. It was a time when the public were starting to love football again after having to deal with the Great War. With so many members of the public being away serving the enthuasim for football and sport decreased but when football came back after the war, more and more people had started to love it again. 200,000 fans that attempted to get into the 1923 cup final was just one indication that football was coming popular again.

Umbro also manufactured a style of shorts which set off in the 80's, they were made from nylon, had a drawstring waistband and came in a range of bright colours. Nicknamed "Umbros" these shorts intended to be a part of the football strip. In 1980's many youths joined soccer leagues, teens, youths and young adults began wearing these shorts as an everyday clothing item. Both genders thought that these were quite popular and on trend. Other brands of shorts such as Adidas, Diadora, Hummel, Lotto, Mitre and Xara also were popular. By mid 1990's Umbro lost its popularity of these shorts to shorts such as cargo shorts.
