Did Nike steal Umbro's identity?
England to finally ditch Umbro as kit supplier for American giants Nike
"The England national football team will have their kits designed by Nike after the FA agreed a deal with the American company turning its back on Umbro's long history with England."
The FA deal is made up of getting rid of Umbro as their supplier, these have been supplying this since the 1950's apart from an eight-year stretch from 1974-82 when Admiral took control of the design, and replace them with Nike.
The English manufacturers company deal lasts until 2018 but Nike are expected to take over with a new kit by next spring. England will continue to wear Nike until 2030 after the football association secured a new contract that could be worth in excess of £400 million.
The move sees the Fa chose an overseas company to supply the national kit for the first time and is a crucial blow for Umbro, a subsidiary of Nike.
Umbro unfortunately has struggled to hold onto deals with the some Premier league teams, and will lose Manchester City next season when their deal expires. Nike will take over the responsibility of designing the current premier league championships from 2013 onwards. The only other team currently wearing an Umbro designed kit in the top flight is Southampton, but that deal is also coming to an end after this season.
Umbro has seen Nike and its competitors Adidas take over a host of their deals in recent years but losing their £20 million-a-year contract with England will be the most damaging. Nike announced plans to sell Umbro, who they bought for $285 million in 2007 placing its future in serious debt.
